Here’s to a trouble-free BBQ and campfire season

It’s finally the season for BBQs and evenings around the campfire! Here’s to tasty grilled meats, smoky veggies and sticky marshmallows!

For experiences that are fun from all points of view and accident-free, follow our safety tips and advice.

For the BBQ

  • Do an inspection to find leaks. Before the first time you use your BBQ each year, take a few minutes to check the condition of the hoses. The best way to detect a leak is to spread soapy water on the hose and look for bubbles. Check as well whether the tank has expired.
  • Clean thoroughly to prevent grease fires. Remove the grills for washing and remove all traces of rust and grease. Don’t ignore the bottom of the BBQ either, because built-up grease could catch fire and risk causing injury.
  • Choose your location carefully. Put your BBQ in a location with great ventilation. Don’t choose an enclosed gazebo or sunroom, even if it has windows. A BBQ also has to be far enough from trees, bushes and flammable materials.
  • Choose appropriate tools. Use long-handled tools and heat-resistant gloves when cooking to avoid burns. Don’t wear flowing clothing that could catch fire when you’re handling food.
  • Monitor cooking closely. Never leave a BBQ unattended. Fires can spread in just a few seconds. Ideally, you should keep an extinguisher close in case of emergency.
  • Maintain safely. After you’re done cooking, let the BBQ cool completely before you clean it. If you use charcoal, collect the ashes in a metal container designed for this purpose.

Around the campfire

  • Obey the law. First, find out whether your town or municipality allows citizens to build outdoor fires. Fires are often required to be built into a screened fireplace set on a non-flammable surface.
  • Choose a sensible location. Your fire zone must be in a cleared area, at a sufficient distance from your home, trees and flammable materials.
  • Monitor the fire constantly. Never leave a fire unattended, because even if it’s in a fireplace, sparks can escape and cause a fire. Keep children away from the fire, and don’t let them run around close to it.
  • Burn the proper materials. Use dry wood, which gives off fewer sparks, and don’t add flammable liquids such as lighter fluid, even to start your fire.
  • Extinguish the fire effectively. Before going inside, put plenty of water on the fire and stir the ashes to cool them.

If you follow these tips, your summer will be both fun and safe!
